Composed of a glycolic and lactic acid copolymer, it retains about 75% of its initial tensile strength after 14 days, and its complete absorption by hydrolysis occurs between 56 and 70 days. It is ideal for soft tissue approximation and ligatures.

• Vicryl (polyglactin 910), braided — in stock at MediUnit: 50% strength loss around day 21, full absorption in 56 to 70 days. The default choice for soft tissue, subcutaneous layers, and ligatures.
• Monocryl (poliglecaprone 25), monofilament — available to order in our Ethicon range: faster to fully absorb (91 to 119 days) but loses mechanical strength as early as day 7-14. Favored for subcuticular skin closure because it glides without a "sawing" effect through tissue.
• PDS / PDS II (polydioxanone), monofilament — available to order: the slowest of the common absorbables, retaining 50% strength at day 28-42 and fully resorbing in 180 to 210 days. Reserved for closures needing prolonged support (abdominal wall, pediatric tendon sheath).
• Chromic catgut — an older technology now largely retired from modern Moroccan operating rooms in favor of Vicryl: absorbed by enzymatic digestion (more variable and more inflammatory) in 14 to 21 days for plain gut, up to 90 days for chromic. Reserve it for indications where local protocol still mandates it (e.g., certain public-sector obstetric ligatures).

Non-absorbable sutures: Silk, Nylon and Monofilaments

For external skin closure, cardiovascular, or orthopedic surgery in Morocco, non-absorbable sutures remain essential. They guarantee permanent mechanical support.

• Silk: Natural braided suture, highly manageable and comfortable for knotting. Often used for oral mucosa or ophthalmology.
• Nylon / Monofilament: Synthetic suture with a smooth surface, minimizing tissue trauma and infection risks. Ideal for cosmetic skin closure.
• Polypropylene (Monoprene): Excellent tissue tolerance, perfect slide, and high elasticity. Preferred in vascular surgery.

Selecting the right needle and USP size

The swaged needle determines the initial trauma during tissue penetration. Thread sizes are expressed according to USP nomenclature (from 6/0 for cosmetic microsurgery to 2 for heavy abdominal wall closures).

• Triangular profile (Cutting): Designed to penetrate dense tissues like skin or fibrous tissue.
• Round profile (Taper): Ideal for delicate tissues, separating fibers without cutting to minimize bleeding (viscera, vessels).
